As I was back-to-school clothes shopping for my two daughters recently, I couldn't help but laugh as the styles I wore as a teenager have come back around after twenty years!

This season's hottest feature is layers, layers, layers!
The top eight must have wardrobe essentials for layering this Fall and Winter 2007 are:

1- Leggings - yes they are back with a new twist! Available in more colors and with great lace and rhinestone accents, they are perfect to wear under skirts, or with a long sweater accented with a wide belt!

2- Long horizontal striped sweaters - definitely needed to go with the leggings!

3- Patterned over the knee socks and tights- adorable with a skirt or skorts!

4- Hoodies - formerly known as the zippered sweatsuit jacket have been renamed and are now shorter in length and available in a variety of styles, patterns and colors.
Layered with a long tank top or cami underneath, they have become a new fashion craze.

5- Plaid jackets and hats - in black, whites and reds are perfect accessories with a great retro look.

6- Ballet flats - yes they are back again but better than ever!

7- Wide embellished belts - a must have for the long horizontal striped sweater.

As a parent how can you establish some rules for getting your kids to do their homework without a daily fight? How can you contribute without actually doing the work for them?
It is important to establish good study habits from the beginning. It is much easier to start a new, good habit than break an old, bad one. Good study habits depend greatly on structure: where to study, when to study, how much time to allow per day for studying as well as how to manage time for long-term projects. A child should have a private work area, well stocked with supplies and comfortably lit. If you want your children to do well in school then school--and homework--has to come first. Extra curricular activities are wonderful, but having unscheduled time is important to children as well.
So, start setting up study habits early and your children will be well on their way to a successful academic career.

It's back to school time again. Most children are excited about seeing their friends, meeting a new teacher, getting new clothes and new school supplies. However, for children with learning disabilities, back to school time can be a real challenge. The return of "problem" subjects, a new teacher's perception of their different learning styles and classmates opinions on their differences can cause a great deal of anxiety for kids with learning disabilities. How can you tell if your child might have a learning disability? What do you do if you suspect he or she does?

According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, learning disabilities are disorders that the affect the brain's ability to receive, process, store and respond to information.

The most common treatment for learning disabilities is special education. Other professionals such as speech and language therapists also may be involved. Some medications may be effective in helping the child learn by enhancing attention and concentration. Psychological therapies may also be used. Learning disabilities can be lifelong problems. But the important thing is to identify the problem and help the child devise strategies for overcoming it.

Video Game Addictions?

Doctors have backed down from a controversial proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder akin to alcoholism, claiming further study is needed.

Addiction experts also opposed the idea at the American Medical Association's annual meeting, when it was initially proposed. A committee of the influential physicians' group had proposed video game addiction be listed as a mental disorder in the American Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders, a guide used by the American Psychiatric Association in diagnosing mental illness.

They said more study is needed before excessive use of video and online games could be considered a mental illness.

Addiction is said to affect about 10 percent of players. What do you think? Is it just a time-consuming hobby that forces you to call your children to the dinner table a minimum of six times, or are you ready to call for support of insurance coverage for treatment?

Earlier this month, the world said goodbye to NASCAR vice-chairman Bill France, Jr., who passed away following a long battle with cancer. Although his late father, William H.G. With springtime in full force, many children are spending lots of time outdoors. It is also a time for parents to be extra vigilant to keep kids safe and healthy. Of particular importance this time of year are allergies and asthma, water safety, sun safety and insect repellent safety.

Having uncontrolled allergies can put your child at risk for getting a secondary sinus infection or ear infections. It can also make asthma symptoms worse. If your child is showing signs of spring allergies, it would be wise to visit your pediatrician or allergist.

Teach your child to swim, but remember that younger children should never be left unsupervised, even if they are strong swimmers. And no one should ever swim alone. Also, life jackets are a must when swimming or boating in lakes, rivers or the ocean.

Sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection of at least 15 spf should be applied before exposure to the sun outdoors. It should be reapplied every 2 hours, or more often when swimming. Limit exposure to the sun during peak hours, and protect your child's eyes with sunglasses.

Insect repellent should be used to protect against insect-borne diseases, but it can be confusing to choose the right kind. Those with less than 10% deet are safe for children, as are others with citronella and soybean oil. If using a deet-based repellent, be sure to wash it off as soon as possible as it is absorbed through the skin.

Just a little extra caution when playing outside this spring will ensure a season full of enjoyment in the outdoors!

A couple of weeks ago, Alec Baldwin made national headlines with an angry, ranting voice mail he left for his 12-year-old daughter. Initially, there was an outpouring from angry and upset parents expressing their disbelief that he would have called his daughter such hurtful names. As a few days went by, though, the feeling around the talk show circuit was more compassionate, an "It could've been me", kind of attitude. What do you think? Did he step way over the line? Or was he just upset in the heat of the moment?

Disciplining a teen is probably one of the most trying aspects of parenthood. Teens naturally test their limits and push your buttons in doing so. They often enjoy getting a rise out of, and can take advantage of an emotional adult. But using scare tactics to discipline a teenager simply does not work. Scare tactics will undermine your credibility, and you will lose the respect of the teen. Instead, if necessary, take a brief "time out" for yourself to collect your thoughts, and practice active listening. Stop what you are doing and give them your full attention.

It is important to communicate limits, or rules, for your teen, but let him or her have a say in determining those limits. Be consistent in upholding the rules, even if you are too tired to enforce them, but be fair. And stay true to your values, being sure to deliver that message to your teen.

Fair and firm discipline allows a teen to feel safe, and allows responsibility for one's own actions. And if you do blow your top, just remember that for next time and learn from the experience.

Helping Children Cope with Trauma

Helping children avoid or overcome emotional problems in the wake of violence or disaster can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenthood. Unfortunately, we cannot shelter our children from current events. Even if you ban television news and newspapers in your home, children learn from other students at school, or older students from their teachers, about current, sometimes scary, events. So what is the best way to discuss violence, war and terrorism with our children?

The American Psychological Association lists several guidelines for addressing topics with our children, including the recent shootings at Virginia Tech. Among ideas on the list are keeping the lines of communication open and assuring your child he may ask any questions he might have. Be sure to listen to their questions and responses and offer reassurance, even if they are repetitive, as so often is the case with younger children. Be honest, but do not make unrealistic promises.

Children deal with trauma in many different ways, from separation anxiety and regressive behavior to withdrawal or lashing out and a plethora of emotions in between. It is important to be involved in our childrens' lives to get an understanding of their feelings, in order to better help them cope.

Preventing Spring Sports Injuries

With childhood obesity on the rise, we have all been made aware of the benefits to getting our children away from the TV and up and moving. Organized sports are a fantastic way to encourage exercise, but especially as they shake off that winter rust, children are susceptible to injuries. According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under suffer medically treated sports injuries each year.

When we think of sports injuries, we tend to picture bone-jarring tackles and subsequent head injuries and broken bones that can sometimes accompany them. But not all sports injuries are so dramatic. Athletes can suffer from muscle strains, cuts and bruises, and repetitive-motion injuries.

Fortunately, getting hurt doesn’t have to be “part of the game.” It is estimated that half of all sports- and recreation-related injuries can be prevented. There are a few simple steps to take to ensure your child stays safe. Before the start of the season, your child should undergo a complete physical examination. Most teams require this, but if yours does not, it is an important step. Children should always wear correctly fitted protective gear, even during practice. In fact, most injuries happen during practice, not games. They need to warm up and stretch before a game, and be sure to keep them hydrated. Kids should never try to play through an injury, as that could just make a bad situation worse.

So soccer moms rejoice! (And baseball moms, basketball, track, swimming, etc.) Your kids will be learning teamwork and getting fit this spring, and with a few quick steps, they'll be safe too!

Cabin Fever

It's mid-February, and for many the winter blahs are in full swing. That groundhog tells us we'll have an early spring, but until then, many of us are stuck inside hoping, waiting with bated breath, until the daffodils begin to sprout and it's warm enough to venture back outside with the kids.

If cabin fever has the kids climbing the walls and has you pulling out your hair, don't despair. Something as simple as a change in routine can spice things up. Try serving breakfast for dinner, for instance! Or let the kids help with dinner and make personal pizzas. Let everyone pick a favorite board game and have a family game night marathon. Or sew a couple of buttons on lone socks, pull out the sofa and voila! It's a puppet theater from behind!

If you have crafty children, try a craft night. Make family silhouettes using a flashlight and piece of posterboard. Trace around your children's silhouettes and cut out for a fun keepsake. Or have them create something special for a grandparent or teacher.

For extra-active kids, get a door-frame basketball hoop and invent your own games. Or find a juggling kit or yo-yo and help them learn a few new tricks.

There's always the option to take them to an indoor play place or the local YMCA to blow off some steam. Most libraries have a children's storytime hour, and you could check out some new books while you're there, too.

Whatever you do, enjoy the last weeks of winter while you're "stuck" inside with the kids. Besides, if you believe the groundhog, it's practically spring already!

The holidays are an exciting time of year for kids. But with such a flurry of activity and planning, we often become careless. Take a few minutes to catch your breath and do a safety double-check. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides the following safety tips to keep your family safe this holiday. Some may seem obvious, but we don't always consider the obvious when rushing from cookie baking to the mall to family ice skating night to that one final trip out for wrapping paper and tape. Please review these helpful ideas and be safe!

Trees

When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant."
When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

Lights

Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.
Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

Toy Safety

Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and interest level of the intended child. Toys too advanced may pose safety hazards for younger children.
Children under age three can choke on small parts contained in toys or games. Government regulations specify that toys for children under age three cannot have parts less than 1 1/4 inches in diameter and 2 1/4 inches long.

Remember that the homes you visit may not be childproofed. Keep an eye out for danger spots.

Bedding
When it comes to being thematic, it is best to go with the flow and decorate the room according to the topic of interest. For instance, if your child’s teen room decor is a based on a surf theme, you could paint the walls ocean blue, and cover the walls with surf and surfer murals. You can obtain bedding that has surfers or tropical sunsets. Denim is also a popular choice for teenage boys or picking a solid color keeps it simple.
